Stanford hosted their first ACC basketball game ever, welcoming the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Cardinal have been on a cold streak recently, losing their last three games. Regardless, playing ranked Oregon on a neutral site, and losing to Clemson and Pitt on the road didn’t seem too bad. Lucky for them, they hosted Virginia Tech on Thursday, hoping to pick up a victory, and get back on the win column.
The Hokies entered the game 6-8, losing two of their three conference games so far, and beating Miami by just 1.
The Cardinal started terribly. They went down 16-4 early, and it seemed as if they were going to get blown out. Shots were missed, turnovers were created, and overall the team morale was down.
Things started to pick up after a timeout called by Head Coach Kyle Smith. Maxime Raynaud hit a hook shot, followed by a Jaylen Blakes’ three. More points from the bunch were able to score, and the Cardinal cut the lead to just 5 at the half.
Entering the second half, Stanford kept up the good play. They tied it up, and took the lead later in the half. Throughout the half, things went back and forth, with highlight plays keeping the Cardinal the lead.
Late in the contest, Stanford started to pull away, and truly put their foot on the necks of Virginia Tech.
The final score was 70-59, in the favor of Stanford.
The star power from Raynaud, Blakes, and Sellers were more than evident on Wednesday night. Raynaud finished with a 19 point, 14 rebound night, continuing his consistency as a player. He also hit three three pointers, proving a huge spark late in the game. Sellers put up 19 points as well, hitting four threes also down the stretch. Blakes had 17 points, as well as 6 assists, completing a great game from the big three.
The most underrated player all night was Donavin Young, a freshman, who came off the bench and put up 7 points and 3 rebounds, including an incredibly athletic poster to help the Cardinal win. It was by far the best performance by Young all season.
Stanford currently sits at 7th in the conference standings, tied with SMU, Florida State, and NC State.
On Saturday at 1pm, Stanford hosts the other Virginia ACC school, the Virginia Cavaliers, hoping to win another one.
